Animania: Gangsta. (Recommend)

Damn you, Gangsta. You’re a fascinating story that’s just simply gone too soon. Early into the anime, I was captivated by the extremely stylized artwork and the awesome action scenes. You get a very visceral look into this gritty world of misfits. The story does a phenomenal job of keeping you interested all the way through, while at the same time giving you enough information to completely understand the world that you’re being immersed in.

So, what’s the big problem with Gangsta? Well, it’s way, way too short. Unfortunately, this is due to the studio going bankrupt and closing down. Even the manga is left unfinished, much to many fans’ chagrin. However, today, we’re only discussing the anime. Basically, Gangsta takes place in a world where augmented humans called “Tags” are subservient to “Normal” humans. Our protagonists are the handy men, Worick and Nicolas. The two of them are an extremely cool duo, and honestly, I had so much fun watching them simply exist.

As I had mentioned before, the action is nothing to shake a stick at. Gritty action scenes combined with phenomenal plot points make for edge of your seat fights that keep you wanting more. Particularly, the fight with Nico and Doug was absolutely phenomenal. Watching the two of them go at it, swords and knives flying, was definitely a sight to behold. The mature overtones of prostitution, crime, and genocide also lend strongly to the story’s atmosphere, as the city that they reside in is a haven against all things that could potentially be out to destroy their way of life.

Honestly, if you’re a huge fan of shows like Samurai Champloo (considering that Gangsta was made by the same studio) this is an absolute must watch. If you’re a fan of anime in general, this is definitely going to be right up your alley as well. Honestly, not many shows have grabbed me and kept my interest as well as Gangsta did. If you can get over the fact that there is absolutely no ending, and enjoy the show for exactly what it is, you’ll get a lot out of it. It’s a gritty, artistic, beautifully drawn anime that will sate the blood lust or the most critical parts of your brain throughout. It’s a definite recommend from me.
